Teaching Young Children to Settle Conflicts without Violence

A well written handbook appealing to a wide audience, developing empathy and professional understanding in the reader. Included are explanations of what may cause younger children to become frustrated, aggressive or violent.

Practical advice on the environment, plus plans for games and lessons, could be used independently. However the constructive approach to children’s development provides a powerful rationale on which to base a preventive, whole-school policy – for which there are further guidelines.

Emanating from explanations of young children’s thoughts and feelings there is advice on providing support, encouraging assertiveness and non-violent conflict resolution. Here, children’s language development is stressed, not simply in terms of vocabulary, but as central to the growth of understanding and the problem-solving process.
