Learning About the Holocaust

This is a book of major importance to a wide audience of adults and older pupils, and an excellent resource for teaching about the Holocaust. It traces the history of anti-semitism, and includes the experiences of gypsies, homosexuals, people with disabilities and others who were persecuted. Themes of collaboration, indifference, obedience, dehumanisation, resistance and rescue are explored.

The book concludes with discussion of responses to the Holocaust, and to racism, anti-semitism and “ethnic cleansing” in Europe since the end of the war.

The author has identified pertinent and searching questions for students in each chapter. She also usefully identifies the concepts involved, contributions to attainment targets in history, cross-curricular themes, and links with other subjects such as psychology, science and sociology.
