Fairtrade Fortnight – Guardians of the Rainforest film
Publisher: Fairtrade Foundation

A film made in 2020 for schools about the people of the great Gola Rainforest in Sierra Leone, West Africa.
14-year-old Beshey shares the story of his family, explaining how a group of cocoa farmers have come together to protect the forest, and develop their communities through Fairtrade.
The challenge for the people of the forest edge is to find ways to increase their income without harming the rainforest. The film explores ‘forest friendly farming’, where cocoa farmers work together in a Fairtrade co-operative, farm organically, and respect the trees, animals and birds.
You can also download an accompanying resource to the short film ‘Guardians of the Rainforest’. This lesson teaches learners about the importance of forest friendly farming which is a farming technique used by the Ngoleagorbu cocoa farmers of the Gola rainforest. It is designed for KS2 and KS3 students who have a basic understanding of rainforest environments.
